Wikipedia describes copyright as a legal right that grants the creator of an original work exclusive rights
to its use and distribution. It is a form of intellectual property, applicable to certain forms of creative
While the majority of the students using our service will know this definition well (AKA: Law Students) some individuals might suddenly forget these fundamentals in the moment. The Easy Student team really wants to avoid this happening.
So, if you’re unsure what constitutes copyright infringement here is a handy definition:
- Making a exact copy of someone’s creative work without their consent. This includes, literary works (like books and written novels) also known as plagiarism, music, artistic pieces, film, sound recording, broadcast, published work (like a textbook), and finally just copying and pasting directly from computer programs/the web
But in South Africa there are a few guidelines to follow around written work:
- Always look for the author’s permission before using their work; When using someone else’s work in a paper, article, or speech, you’re required to mention the source in detail; If you’re going to use a large volume of another person’s work in a paper, you have to talk to the creator; But, if the work is made public, like a public speech or lecture, even a photocopied section of a government publication for the public, you can use it without any permission!
And if you’re wondering, “Does copyright expire?” It does, 50 years after the creator's death.
